Reykjavík City thanks everyone who came out for Culture Night 2026. The festival was a great success despite the rain, as visitors dressed for the weather and made the most of the wide-ranging program.

Culture Night is the biggest event of the year in Reykjavík, celebrating the city's birthday. The festivities offer something for everyone with a strong emphasis on variety, spanning music, visual art, dance, and other entertainment.

Months of preparation

An enormous amount of work goes into an event of this scale. By conservative estimates, around 150 Reykjavík City staff help plan and execute Culture Night.

 This work relies on close collaboration with numerous partners, with planning meetings and discussions getting underway as early as January. Those involved include the police, the fire service, Strætó Public Transport, e-scooter rental companies, tourism representatives, businesses in the city, and others.

Safety closely monitored

Organizers always closely monitor visitor safety and smooth operations at events of this size. The visible presence of police and staff from Reykjavík City and neighboring municipalities throughout the festival area helped foster a positive atmosphere and enhanced safety.

Organizers deployed four walking groups during Culture Night, each made up of police officers and staff from community centers and youth centers. The groups began their shifts at 3 p.m. and worked well into the night. In addition, two community policing groups patrolled alongside staff from youth centers and community centers. Flotinn, the City's youth centers, and youth centers from neighboring municipalities also fielded nine walking teams that circulated through the festival area to support children and young people.

There were some instances of intoxication among young people in the city center, and a shelter operated at the Cathedral Parish Hall to receive children and young people needing assistance or care. Staff from the City's Centers worked at the shelter alongside police officers and youth center staff. No serious incidents of violence occurred, and there were very few fights or similar incidents.

The festival closed with a fireworks display, after which city buses transported guests home. Clearing the city center went smoothly. 

Culture Night visitors left their mark on the city and enjoyed everything on offer.
