City prepares to open parking garages around the clock
The Environment and Planning Committee approved a proposal from Reykjavík City's Environment and Planning Department to prepare the city's parking garages for 24-hour operations. The goal is to improve safety and services while making it easier for residents and visitors to find parking in the city center.
Enhanced monitoring and services
The City will bolster monitoring at the parking garages alongside round-the-clock access. Electronic surveillance will run 24 hours a day, allowing staff to respond faster to incidents or service users needing assistance.
Reykjavík City's parking garages currently feature 164 surveillance cameras, and users have access to phone support. The City will take steps to ensure monitoring, phone response, and other services remain available around the clock.
Better use and operations of parking garages
Round-the-clock access forms part of a broader effort to improve services for city center visitors. This shift will open the garages to more people, including evening and night shift workers in the city center, tourists, and residents hindered by overnight closures.
"Round-the-clock access marks a vital step toward delivering better service to residents and visitors alike. People should be able to rely on the garages whenever they need them, with safety and services guaranteed at all hours. We are also making better use of existing infrastructure, which helps increase utilization and improve garage operations," said Matthías Bernhöj Daðason, head of division at Reykjavík Parking Service.
Officials will announce a start date for round-the-clock access once confirmed.
